LEAN manufacturing achieves less waste across the entire value chain reducing total cost. Any waste reduction also has a direct environmental benefit. This is an area of PrintCity Alliance work since 2004, where members have taken a leading role in process knowledge sharing.

PrintCity Alliance members Leonhard Kurz, manroland, MEGTEC, Merck, Océ, Sappi, Tolerans, UPM and Weilburger Graphics are exhibiting at Ipex 2010, focusing on three leading ‘themes’ PRINT: LEAN.GREEN.SEEN.

Of the three PrintCity Alliance hot topics ‘LEAN’ is possibly the most important one to offer printers & packagers the route to reduced costs and improved profitability.

The PrintCity Alliance is focusing on three industry leading themes at Ipex 2010: PRINT: LEAN.GREEN.SEEN.

PrintCity Alliance members Leonhard Kurz, manroland, MEGTEC, Merck, Océ, Sappi, Tolerans, UPM and WEILBURGER Graphics are exhibiting at Ipex 2010, focusing on three leading ‘themes’ PRINT: LEAN.GREEN.SEEN.

Of these three hot topics, ‘GREEN’ is possibly the issue most talked about, but least fully understood by many in our industry. Since 2008 the PrintCity Alliance has taken a leading role in knowledge sharing in this important area, and our members plan to continue to do so.

Environmental Impact – GREEN

GREEN is concerned with Environmental Impact and is inter-connected with Lean Manufacturing, both of which can deliver cost savings and business growth opportunities. In our latest project in this area, PrintCity members have been working since 2009 on a new Carbon Footprint & Energy Efficiency study, which will be published in autumn 2010.

The transition from a carbon-intense to a low-carbon and more sustainable society will be one of the single most important drivers of the first half of the 21st century for every business and inhabitant of the planet. Climatic and other environmental issues will have an accelerating impact across the entire value chain of publishers, advertisers, packagers, printers and their suppliers.

Of these industry hot topics, ‘SEEN’ is possibly the most interesting opportunity for new business growth in printing, allowing visual, touch, aroma and electronic interaction with consumers, to drive product differentiation, increased business and hence profitability.

SENOLITH® UV FP lacquers by WEILBURGER Graphics - now even safer to use

Gerhardshofen, 26 October 2009  – In order to make UV lacquers even safer for use in production for the food industry, as of now WEILBURGER Graphics GmbH is colouring them with a special green dye that is safe for food packaging. This also sets the varnishes in the SENOLITH® UV FP series by WEILBURGER Graphics apart for production staff in the print room, and makes it easier for them to distinguish between them. It rules out any risk of confusion with varnishes that are not suitable for food use.

The PrintCity Alliance in partnership with PrintWeek completed a successful PRINTplusX Workshop in London during September, highlighting a golden opportunity for Value Added Printing, with a range of printer, designer and brand owner focused speakers.

“The day was a roaring success with us being presented to by a really good mix of people and companies within the sector. They all had excellent and inspiring views in adding value to creative, print and business models. The day was extremely well organised and I must say that it’s been some time since I have got as much out of a workshop. In particular the brainstorming was taxing but fun and, we managed to create some really interesting ideas. I look forward to attending another successful day in the future,” commented Helen Castledine, Creative Director of Greens, High Wycombe.
