Chip-Off effect coating – a new finishing process from WEILBURGER Graphics

Chip-Off effect coating – a new finishing process from WEILBURGER Graphics

Gerhardshofen, 2nd November 2011 – The printing and packaging industry is constantly searching on new finishing processes, materials and effects. Such a new process presents WEILBURGER Graphics GmbH located in the franconian Gerhardshofen together with Merck KGaA and Model Kramp GmbH under the designation Chipp Off effect coating.

The chip off effect coating is a two component finishing which can be applied by a printing press with one coating unit with UV drying.

This innovative effect is based on different surface tensions of the two lacquers and generates an optical and haptical 3D structure. This inhomogeneous structure can be mostly described as “dryed foam” in case of full-surface application of both lacquers. By varying the both lacquer types you will get effects, which are reminiscent of surface structures of oxidized metals, polystyrenes or rubber foam. By adding effect pigments you can increase the effect optically. What is special about the application of introduced pigments is the strong generated edge formation in the supreme lacquer by tearing-off the coating surface in the second run. This causes a spatial reorientation of the pigments in the lacquer during drying process whereby pigments in the border area of the supreme lacquer produce a different interference in comparison with pigments in the homogenous interior. Also a combination of different pigments in the first and in the second run is possible as well as a combination of two different pigments in the final supreme lacquer.

This effect is applied by printing systems with full UV equipment by means of two machine runs. The reason for the second run is that the first lacquer must be cured completely before applying the second lacquer. Also an application of the effect in combination with conventional inks or hybrid inks or by an offline varnishing machine is possible. It is, in particular, important that the second lacquer is only applied after the printing ink is cured completely.

Typical application fields of this new chip-off effect are especially cosmetic packaging, electronics packaging and lifestyle packaging as well as high-quality commercial printing as business plans, business reports or brochures, but also printing products in the field of labels, POS and events. At the moment applications for brand protection are considered, a formulation on the basis of low-migrating components is in the development stage and will enable the use of the effects in the field of pharmaceutical and food packaging as well as in the cigarette industry.

WEILBURGER Graphics GmbH News: Safe printing – safe packaging

Safe printing – safe packaging

Varnishes, inks and adhesives from WEILBURGER Graphics now even safer

Gerhardshofen, 22 August 2011 – the packaging industry is on the move and due to various recent food scandals planning to make the food packaging sector and associated industrial sectors such as the tobacco industry even safer than before. The relevant laws are being tightened up and the choice of suitable substrates, inks, varnishes and adhesives minimised. That is good for protecting consumers, but is a cause of sustained uncertainty for many service providers.

It is for this reason that the company WEILBURGER Graphics has re-catalogued its complete range of products and re-evaluated it in terms of its food conformity in accordance with current statutory requirements and the recommendations issued by the key testing institutes and certifying bodies FABES and ISEGA as well as by the Swiss Commodities Act SR 817.023.21.

In its recently published product manual, WEILBURGER Graphics presents its reworked product class list and provides its customers and other interested parties with comprehensive information on the application options of the individual product classes in direct and indirect contact with food in accordance with current statutory provisions as well as with more detailed information on the subject and related areas.

A main focus of the new product catalogue is the new identification number system that enables the food packaging-related applicability for each class and product to be identified by way of simple number codes. The roll-out of the new identification number system is to be launched on 1 September 2011.

In addition, WEILBURGER Graphics GmbH has on the basis of the excellent level of acceptance of the dying of food-compliant UV lacquers introduced in 2009 for enhanced differentiation purposes in the printing room decided to dye dispersion coatings suitable for food industry use too with immediate effect.

Günter Korbacher, managing director of WEILBURGER Graphics GmbH, comments: ‘We have considered the standardised production of safe food packaging and associated products to be an urgent necessity for many years. Only by way of clear statutory requirements, suitable varnishes, inks, adhesives and substrates and complete inspection chains throughout the entire industry will we be in a position to guarantee comprehensive and sustained consumer protection. That this will have implications for all involved in the process chain must be clear to everyone. Our experience shows that the current uncertainty experienced by users is however largely based on the lack or inadequacy of information provided by the manufacturers. As such, our aim once again is to set a good example and provide our customers with absolute certainty in general and specifically in the production of food-compliant packaging by way of comprehensive information, clear cataloguing and a well-conceived product range that already takes future statutory requirements into account.’

The new 28-page product manual is available in German, English, Spanish and Polish in a handy DIN A6 format directly from WEILBURGER Graphics and can be downloaded as a digital PDF version from the company’s website.

WEILBURGER Grafik-Polska Sp. z o.o. celebrates 10th anniversary

Press statement – for immediate release

WEILBURGER Grafik-Polska Sp. z o.o. celebrates 10th anniversary

Poznan, 23rd September 2010 – The anniversary year of WEILBURGER Grafik-Polska is another milestone in the ten year old company history. In April 2010 the subsidiary company of WEILBURGER Graphics GmbH in Gerhardshofen moved into a new corporate building on the outskirts of Poznan with a large office space of 250 m2 as well as a 1.000 m2 big warehouse.

The success story began in the year 2000, when Josef Kurzok founded the company as a “one-man show” and managed it with great support of Marian Schwark. The high product quality of WEILBURGER Graphics in association with the technical know-how and the respective knowledge of the Polish market of Josef Kurzok proved to be an excellent combination so that the success soon followed. In the following years the turnover as well as the number of employees of the Polish selling agency increased continuously. Already in 2002 the first relocation into a bigger company building on the premises of BSC took place. Regular events throughout Poland – among other things the organization of the first varnish seminar in Szczecin at the end of 2006 as well as the realization of a seminar in Warsaw concerning “brand protection” at the end of 2009 – popularized the name WEILBURGER Grafik-Polska even further.

By now WEILBURGER Grafik-Polska is counted with its six employees and a turnover of just over 2 Mio as a constant within the Polish printing industry.

The festivities for the 10th company anniversary as well as the official inauguration of the new corporate building – to which numerous long-time costumers and members of the GREBE family are expected – will take place in November of this year.
